Our family holiday in Normandy at La Mare Chappey

Last May half term I went to La Mare Chappey in Normandy with my family, hubby and two kids. The area is beautiful and I highly recommend you think about Normandy for your next family holiday, the beaches are lovely and there is so much history to explore, there really is something for everyone. Here’s a little insight to how we got on… Mel x

Intro

We had a wonderful week in Normandy for May Half Term 2018. We left home Friday afternoon & drove via the Euro tunnel & arrived at La Mare Chappey late in the evening. Even though we were arriving late, Audrey was around to greet us which was lovely. We awoke to beautiful views of countryside & pretty stone barns the following morning.

La Mare Chappey is perfectly situated to give you the best of the countryside and coast. Located close to a small village in the unspoilt & tranquil Normandy countryside and only 25 minutes to some wonderful beaches.

Accommodation

There are four child-friendly holiday cottages and an apartment within the complex. We stayed in a 2-bedroom cottage (Bumpkin) which was a good size. Every cottage has Wi-Fi, sky TV, DVD player, heating & toys. The kitchen was well equipped including a dishwasher and coffee machine and included on our arrival were the breakfast essentials of bread, milk & cheese, which meant we didn’t have to dash to the supermarket 😊

The cottage is a converted barn and so the bedrooms had high vaulted ceilings. The second bedroom (twin room) was large enough to accommodate 2 cots. There were also 2 bathrooms. The downstairs was open plan with doors leading onto the patio, which had a great view of the gardens, play equipment & pool. The patio had a BBQ, table & chairs and a sun canopy.

There is a separate laundry room which can be used at anytime and is free of charge.

Bistro & bar on site – food can be chosen & ordered in advance from a menu that is emailed to guests. There is a weekly BBQ in the Bistro which is a great way to meet other families.

Grounds

The grounds are really well maintained by Geoff. The cottages sit around a central courtyard, which has a lovely water fountain with tables & chairs to sit and relax. The buildings are made from traditional stone and are very pretty. There is a large lawn area for ball games, plus another area with lots of play equipment, also a hot tub and the swimming pool.

Play

There is loads within the complex to keep the kids busy. The pool was wonderful, fenced off with plenty of chairs, sunbeds & umbrellas and really warm (heated to 28). We swam every day. There are swings, slides, a Wendy house, large trampoline, basketball net, football net and lots of space to generally run around and play outdoor games. The indoor play room was also very well equipped and my two enjoyed the table football and air hockey.

The bouncy castle was put up every afternoon/early evening. The grounds were very safe & secure, we were able to sit on our patio and watch the kids play.

Personal favs further affield

We all loved Carteret Beach, miles and miles of soft sand with lovely warm turquoise sea.

We walked & paddled for hours, there is a café & ice cream kiosk on the beach – the adults were able to have a beer while the kids had an ice cream, perfect 😊

The light house at Barneville – Carteret was good fun to climb and the view was amazing.

Out and about

Briquebec Market on a Monday – beautiful French village with cobbled streets.

Sainte -Mere-Eglise and the Airbourne Museum.

City de la Mer in Cherbourg – great museum with a deep aquarium (deepest in Europe!), La Redoutable – a huge nuclear submarine which you can explore and the baggage hall for the Titanic in the original huge art deco transatlantic liner terminal.

Food

We had fab weather & BBQ’d in our garden every day 😊

Head ‘Into the Prairie’, for a little bit of family fun in Brittany, not far from the sea…

Liz, Corentin, Dara, Molly, Una & Róisín, welcome you to their self-catering cottages set in the Brittany countryside not far from the sea… Let your family adventure in Brittany start at Into the Prairie, you won’t be disappointed.

Brittany is a beautiful place to visit in the spring and early summer, beaches are quiet, and the plants are just coming into bloom. If you’re looking for a family-friendly place to stay at to explore what Brittany has to offer for a family holiday, then check out ‘Into the Prairie’ owned by Liz Lamour. Her beautiful cottages live up to their names, each having it’s very own personality, cosy, fun, trendy, pretty, romantic, sweet, cute and vintage! There is one for everybody and all offer a perfect base from which to venture.

Liz has eight self-catering cottages on her little prairie and B&B options too. Families are welcome all year round and if it’s a little chilly in the evenings most of the cottages have log burners to snuggle up in front of. We showcase the best three of her child-friendly holiday cottages, the ones with lots of baby and toddler equipment and that are perfect for young children.

The cottages are located in the Cotes d’Armor in Brittany near the village of Plelo and sit in a stunning rural location offering guests the best experience of Brittany country life, yet only 10 minutes from child-friendly beaches and fun attractions. Kids can run and skip in the fields while parents relax and admire the beauty.

The farm restaurant and shop is family-run too and is just 3km from the Prairie, and it’s here you will also find, swings, slides, pedal boats, gams, horses pigs, chickens and lots of walks and gardens to explore.

Last year Liz planted lots of produce in her gardens and guests enjoyed picking fresh salad, vegetables and herbs for their culinary delights, it was a hit and Liz has decided to do the same this year, local produce is also used in the family restaurant.

As Liz is a keen gardener, during the spring you will find lots of bulbs blooming all over the place, all of the gardens offer a wonderful place to relax outside when the weather is good, with a glass of wine or cup of tea while the kids have fun in the play area.

All little guests staying at ‘Into the Prairie’ get a complimentary pony ride or free tip on the pedal boats at the family restaurant, The Farm-Inn.

There are child-friendly beaches within 10 minutes drive to Into The Prairie and lots of family days out ideas from wildlife parks, mini golf, swimming pools, tree climbing, family cycling, adventure parks, world heritage sites and more.

It is hard to explain the beauty of this place, the stunning gardens and scenery and friendliness of the Lamour family, you will just have to try it out for yourself.

Into the Prairie – Holiday Tots picks of cottages at Into the Prairie

Here is a glimpse at a couple of the family-friendly holiday cottages available here:

Isidore is a fabulous old barn that has been rediscovered into a trendy holiday home. Liz has maintained much of its original aspect and it wouldn’t look out of place in a glossy homes magazine. The children’s bedroom is a suspended glass house! It also has its own private garden and terrace, two bedrooms and an open plan living space.

Maison de Anne

This is a quirky, vintage little holiday home with two bedrooms and a private garden. The relaxed feeling of this cottage really will offer a home from home experience.

This is just a taster of the child-friendly holiday cottages available at Into the Prairie, for more details take a look on The Holiday Tots website. They really do offer a fun and beautiful location to spend a family holiday in Brittany.

Family holiday review – child-friendly holiday complex in the Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France

In a region dotted with tiny hamlets, lakes and beautiful countryside you will find these wonderful family-friendly holiday cottages. Each cottage is baby and toddler friendly and there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained within the grounds. The Tilbury family headed off for their summer holiday earlier this year and below is what they thought. You can view the cottages they stayed in by visiting the Holiday Tots website here: holiday cottages

Tilbury family: mum, dad, Ben age 7 and Maya age 5.

144308566178815_largeAfter finishing school that week, the family were looking for a chilled holiday somewhere we could let the kids run free and enjoy themselves, come and go as we please and just enjoy some peace and quiet ourselves too!

Stansted to Limoges is a dead easy flight, nice and quick and no hassle. The car hire at Limoges is ridiculously easy too – we literally stepped out of the airport and there was the car hire centre, collecting the car took about 10 minutes which was great when you just want to get going.

The holiday complex is only 40 minutes from the airport and it’s a fairly easy drive too. We arrived at the cottage complex to a warm welcome from Paula and some lovely French bread, cheese and a bottle of rose – fab! Paula showed us around and let us explore in our own time, the kids had other ideas though and were desperate to get into the pool, so whilst they raided the suitcases for swim kit, we sat outside and enjoyed the first bit of glorious sunshine…

The accommodation is ideal. We stayed in PM4S and the size was perfect for the four of us. Our little courtyard was great for some al fresco dining and the kids were able to run in and out to the gardens and come as they please. (There are 4 cottages in total, suitable for a variety of party configurations and you could hire the whole place – for up to 26 people… that’s our next step!) The grounds are awesome! So much room to play and lots of different areas to explore. The pool was a huge hit, and the hot tub! But they also enjoyed the barn, little play areas and indoor games room as they all provided some relief from the mid-day sun. What really surprised me was the peacefulness, it is so quiet here. It’s gorgeous, you can really sit back and relax, read a good book and have a great nights sleep!

Local Boulangerie

Local Boulangerie

My husband took on the role as croissant and fresh bread collector each morning (a 5 minute drive to the village) and we enjoyed lunch every day outside the cottage.

We did venture out to a few places, Parc Bellvue –  http://www.parc-bellevue.fr/page/accueil  (fairly expensive for what it is – a bit tired and in need of some modernisation in my opinion) and trips to Roucherchourt (lovely to walk around, enjoy the chateau and some local boule watching) La Guerlie beach is only a mile down the road and has a café, restaurant, water sports, beach, playground etc… but to be honest, our home for the week was so good for all of our needs and wants – we stayed here most of the time!

Toddler play area

If you are after a chilled family friendly break away with a warm welcome and very helpful hosts (Paula booked a restaurant for us and also gave us tips on places to visit and things to do, information on the beauty treatments – which are amazing, according to our neighbours for the week!) this is the place to come. I kept saying to myself all week, “This place just works.” They have thought of everything. There is plenty of baby/toddler equipment and anything you need, just ask.

f66e4b3115It is so safe and quiet, we could let the kids roam and know that they were fine. There are toys and games dotted around the cottage, the grounds are full of things to do, there is no chance of boredom here. The week we stayed, two out of the four cottages were occupied so we had pretty much everything to ourselves. I think the kids would have preferred some others to play with, however the following week 13 kids were booked in – so it was an unusually quiet week for the owners.

maya-hammockWe will definitely return and come back with friends and family, they will love the place.  The kids miss the hot tub and the lovely cats, my husband misses his early morning coffee on the bench overlooking the whole grounds and I really miss that hammock (when I could get a look in! – can’t quite beat it!

A big thank you to Paula, Richard and their girls. A lovely stay, can’t wait to return!
